An established community featuring mature trees, parks, and close proximity to Downtown

By Erica Marie

Don McKay has been active in the Edmonton area real estate market with Royal LePage for over 30 years. He is a Lifetime Member of the Top 1% of Realtors in Canada and is proud to be a part of the Edmonton Community Development Company’s (ECDC) efforts to revitalize core neighbourhoods.

According to Don, the two factors that draw people to live in the areas of Alberta Avenue and McCauley are “young families looking to get their first home and price – affordability is the deciding factor on whether they can enter the market. The other buyers are people that grew up in the area and want to stay close to parents, family and friends.”

There is still some stigma attached to these neighbourhoods due to their past reputation for crime and drug activity. However, the efforts of its community members and the city of Edmonton have made a significant impact in making these areas a desirable place to live again. Don acknowledges the positive changes in these established neighbourhoods and says, “when an area starts to turn around, the big attraction is the lower price for the same house as elsewhere. Once the buyers can see the changes happening, there is an excitement that the area is becoming a vital neighbourhood again. People start taking their families to the park, having block parties, and connecting with their neighbours.”
